What I'm Reading (and What I'm Not)

I'm getting a wee bit nervous. Since moving, I've only managed to finish 4 books. I'm way overdue on a book review for Shelf Awareness, and my goal of 150 books is staring me in the face, but I keep getting sidetracked with house projects and holiday plans.

I thought I was golden, since in mid-November I'd already read 138; but I'm still working on #143. The pressure is mounting, ack! I can't get this close and not make it though, that's just sad.

So I'm hoping that the week from Christmas to New Year's I'll have a good chunk of time to do a lot of reading. Noel has that whole week off work... so maybe he and Eleanor will have a daddy-daughter date or two while I hole up with a book!

But, here's what I have been reading.

For Shelf Awareness:

Watching the Dark by Peter Robinson. This is #20 in the Inspector Alan Banks series. I read one other a few years ago, and this one left me with a similar reaction. It was pretty good, but not great. I think I'll go back to Ian Rankin instead of reading any more of these. But - it was an intriguing enough crime; a cop is found shot through the heart by a crossbow. Connections to human trafficking and a cold case from six years before lead Alan Banks to Tallinn, Estonia. It's not the mystery I found dull, but rather Robinson's expository style.

The Midwife's Tale by Sam Thomas. Set in York, England in 1644, this is another mystery, wherein midwife Bridget Hodgson is attempting to save a friend whom she believes was falsely convicted of murder. I'm not too far into it, but so far I'm quite enjoying it - the historical detail is fascinating, and the standards of cleanliness are horrifying.

For fun:

Ivy & Intrigue: A Very Selwick Christmas by Lauren Willig. This Christmas novella picks up with Lord Richard and Lady Amy Selwick where The Secret History of the Pink Carnation left off. As usual with Willig's books; it's funny, ridiculous, and addicting all at the same time.

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. I'm going through this one really slowly, because it's a perfect before bed read, so I've just been reading a chapter a day. It's interesting enough that I won't fall asleep, but not so interesting that I'll stay up reading "just one more" chapter. And the descriptions of how cold Mt. Everest is make me grateful for my cozy bed!
