I really love our BabyLit Pride and Prejudice. Eleanor got it for Christmas, and we've read it a lot. I liked it so much that I bought one for my little niece Anna who arrived last month. As you'd expect, I was super excited when the publisher agreed to send me the rest of the series to review. These books are great - well made, with eye-catching illustrations and text that incorporates parts of classic stories in baby form.
Jane Eyre is probably my least favorite of the four - although that's a tough call, because it's still a gorgeous book. It starts with 1 governess, 2 trunks, and counts up to 10 books, with lovely illustrations of scenes from the book. I especially like the picture of Thornfield Hall. I do think that the author could have come up with slightly different things to count that would've incorporated more of the story. (Poor St. John got completely left out.)
Romeo and Juliet is also a counting primer. It starts with 1 balcony, and ends with 9 streets and bridges, and 10 kisses. The best illustration is '7 masks' - I love the brightly colored, elaborate masks depicted. Surprisingly I read several critical reviews on Amazon, talking about how it departs from the true story. But really, were you expecting suicide in a board book?!
Alice and Wonderland is a colors primer - including (of course) a white rabbit, a blue caterpillar, red hearts, and a yellow teapot. I think my favorite page is the black shoes - because it shows Alice disappearing down the rabbit hole, with only her legs and shoes sticking up in the air. This one would make a great 1st birthday present, since it's colors instead of numbers and might appeal to a slightly younger crowd.
These books are so beautiful that I can't hog them all for ourselves - so I'm passing 2 of them on to one of you, in honor of Eleanor's 2nd birthday. One commenter will win both Jane Eyre and Alice in Wonderland.
Update! The winner is commenter #10 - Megan, who would like to see a board book version of Moby Dick.
Congrats Megan, I'll be emailing you soon!
