The Young Adult Book and Movie Club: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Party

The 2014 Young Adult Book and Movie Club (YABMC from here on out!) got off to a great start with a fun book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

All month in the YABMC Facebook group we discussed things like:
  • who our favorite Hogwarts professor is
  • why making Harry completely ignorant of the wizarding world was genius, since it allowed JK Rowling to naturally introduce magic to Harry and the reader simultaneously, instead of forcing world-building facts down our throats
  • how very Wormwood-esque (from Roald Dahl's Matilda) the Dursleys are
  • and how pretty much all of us love Neville a lot, and are bummed they cut so much of his storyline out of the movie.
Then last night some of my real-life friends who are participating in YABMC and I got together and watched the Sorcerer's Stone. And, of course, we had to make some super awesome Potter-themed snacks. (I will say, I think we set the bar high! How will we keep this up for 8 months?)

I made "dragon's blood" and Ollivander's wands... a vegan spinach alfredo dip, and vegan breadsticks. The dip was all right, but the breadsticks were actually delicious! Hooray for finding a really good dairy-free recipe.

There was not only butterbeer present, but also gorgeous butterbeer cupcakes, and then some quite yummy bludgers (dough wrapped around pepperonis).

But the hit of the night were the sorting hat desserts. She put M&Ms in the house colors inside each cone, so for "intermission" during the movie we had our own sorting! I broke open a Hufflepuff, boo. I wanted Gryffindor, naturally. {We had 3 Hufflepuffs, 3 Gryffindors, 2 Slytherins, and a Ravenclaw. Till Noel and Eleanor split another of the Ravenclaws}

I'm going to call month one of YABMC club a resounding success. Don't forget, you can jump into the group at any point! And if you post anything on Instagram or Twitter about your own HP party, hashtag it #yabmc so that I can see it too.

Which house would YOU want to be sorted into?
