31 Days of Awesome Kids' Books: Farmyard Beat

Lindsay Craig - Farmyard Beat

Eleanor and I grabbed Farmyard Beat on a whim at the library. We've now renewed it 3 times, and it's hands-down her favorite bedtime read.

It all starts with the pesky chicks:

Peep-peep-peep!

Chicks can't sleep. Chicks can't sleep.
Chicks can't sleep
'cause they got that beat!

Peep! Peep! Peep-peep-peep!
Peep! Peep! Peep-peep-peep!
All that peeping wakes up...

Sheep!

Farmyard Beat - Lindsay Craig

And then the sheep wake up the cat, the cat wakes up the cows, and so on.

Pretty soon all the farm animals are making so much noise that Farmer Sue comes to investigate what's going on. She looks around, doesn't see anything, and is headed back to bed when...

Peep! Peep!
Peep-peep-peep!
Chicks can't help it.
They got that beat!

So then Sue joins in the dance with all of the animals, till they all fall in a heap.

Asleep.

The illustrations are by Marc Brown (the creator of Arthur) and his illustrations lend Lindsay Craig's catchy text an irresistible charm. I can't blame Eleanor for loving this book so much.

Although it is a tiny bit annoying to find myself walking around the house after she's in bed muttering "Cows can't sleep. Cows can't sleep. Cows can't sleep 'cause they got that beat."
